We started breeding in 1999, and we did so because the majority of the Munchkins we had been seeing were not only being bred to a specific breed, but they weren't turning out all that well.
We thought we could create better Munchkins.
And we did.
At Sandkats our philosophy
was simple, breed and raise the best Munchkins we could. To that end we ensured
that our Munchkin cats and kittens were treated as part of our family. At Sandkats
we believe that the Munchkin breed should stay exactly as nature had intended
them to be, Domestic Cats with short legs. Sandkats Munchkins were never bred
to ANY other breed of cat except Domestic cats or other Munchkins.
We wanted our Munchkins to be as true to the naturally occuring Munchkin as possible.
Unfortunately sometimes "life happens" and we had to make a decision; keep going or stop.
We started seeing ALOT of "backyard Breeders" around us hearing horror stories of people who bought a Munchkin Kitten for $150 -$200 dollars and had so many health problems with them they either had to spend a small fortune to make them better, or in alot of cases they had to be euthanized.
Breeding good quality cats is expensvie, and trying to compete with people who were selling cats for that price was harder and harder to do. One thing is for sure.. you do get what you pay for.
Then there was some of the stories from the people that we sold cats to, and misjudged thier character. There have been a small number of folks who, for whatever reason, we never heard from again... at all... nothing. It's like they vanished after getting a Munchkin from us. A far cry from the folks who keep in touch now and again to let us how thier new ones are doing, those are the people we thank!
And then there are the ones that would get our non-standard babies and we would find out that they died for extremely stupid reasons, like "well I moved, have a really big yard and put them outside, (even though it's in our contract that they NEVER be outside unless in a carrier or on a leash), and they got hit by cars.
Yeah, it happens.. sadly more than once.
Then there's the life part, after a member of our family developed kidney desease, it became harder and harder to do what was needed to keep the same standards of care. It's takes alot of work to keep a great cattery clean and healthy so before it got to the point where we could no longer do it, we stopped.
We probably could have kept breeding, but we all refused to do it in a way that lowered the standards we set for ourselves, those of you who have a Sandkats Munchkin(s) (we had alot of repeat customers) know what I mean.
We did keep our options open to some degree; we kept 1 blue eyed white longhair female that can be bred should our circumstances change. Our other option that we are considering, is to bred her and give her Munchkin offspring to a couple of good honest Munchkin breeders who have similar goals as we do. That way the Sandkats line of Munchkins won't end.
To all of you who have been wonderful owners of one or more of our babies, thank you! We couldn't have come as far as we have without you!
For those of you that wanted a Sandkats Munchkin, well, about the only thing we can do is to point you to some Munchkin folk that we would buy Munchkins from:
Klassy Kitten Midieval Munchkins
Rugrunners
Munchlets Munchkins
